Pam's Story: Preparing for Possible Futures
Developed by Vesper Hill in collaboration with the Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission, Pam’s Story is a free workshop resource that can be used either at in-person gatherings or online.
This resource is designed for use by groups or organisations who need to think actively about climate adaptation planning in community settings (e.g. local authorities, public health agencies, voluntary groups, etc.). Our Facilitator Guide will help you to plan and run your own session.
The workshop pivots around two audio recordings (links below), presenting alternative possibilities for a hypothetical near-future. Pam, an ordinary woman living somewhere in the Yorkshire region, describes the impacts of adverse weather in her community (based on scientific projections).
The weather itself is the same in both versions of the story, but Pam’s experiences are very different…
In the first version of the story, nothing meaningful has been done to prepare Pam’s community for these possible climate impacts — and she is at the end of her tether.
In the second version, adaptation measures have clearly been implemented, and Pam’s situation seems better as a result.
